Science class should be AWESOME! Participating in hands-on science experiments, raising wiggly creatures, observing life cycles up close will show my low-level learners that biology is something to be excited about!
Our Title 1 charter school was founded to meet the special needs of the local refugee population; my students come from over 40 countries!
Often, our students come from households where English is not the first (or even the second or third!) language spoken. As low-level readers, science vocabulary like "metamorphosis" and "flagellum" can be especially daunting for them. My students are bright, eager, and interested in learning, and we want to do more to boost their confidence and enthusiasm for science by providing hands-on experiments. Our school relies heavily on outside support to make this happen.
My Project
These experiments with live Praying Mantis egg cases, AntWorks, live mealworms and Frog Development Kit will excite and engage my struggling students. They will be able to witness, and take an active role in, the life cycles of small creatures while also learning responsibility and compassion for living things. The Stream Ecology Kit will allow us to take enriching field trips to our nearby creek and pond to see the tiny creatures that live in the water, while the field guides, Bug Blocks, and Lepidoptera (butterfly) Posters will allow them to identify the creatures in our school garden. I have specially selected items that coordinate with our state Science standards, and the experiments promote STEM exploration. Many of these supplies can be re-used again and again in future classes! These resources will go a long way in transforming our science program, and will create a vibrant, living science hub in the library, where hundreds of children can enjoy them every day
My students are often limited by language barriers.
They learn best by DOING. These hands-on science kits will not only engage their imaginations, but will also give them the confidence they need to excel in science. Please consider a donation toward the future success of my young scientists!
