My students need subscriptions to Vocabulary Spelling City and books for vocabulary and systematic phonics instruction. Many are struggling readers and we are working very hard to find ways to differentiate for those learners in a way that they will remain engaged.
I teach a very diverse group of students. Most are living in poverty and have limited means at home. Our school is in an urban district, and was recently reopened, after being closed due to under performance as a middle school. We are now in our third year as a PreK - 8 school. Teachers, administrators and students alike are all working diligently to make our school a great place to grow and learn! As a fairly new teacher, working in a fairly new school, I am doing all I can to acquire and incorporate as many resources as possible for my fourth graders. My students demonstrate a wide variety of readiness and they require a proactive approach to differentiated learning opportunities.
My Project
For my students who are struggling learners, I am looking for ways to differentiate in a way that will provide targeted skills practice. I believe that VocabularySpellingCity subscriptions will keep the students engaged while at the same time providing them with the opportunity to practice "word work" using word lists that are directly linked to our district curriculum.
Students will have access to the program at home and I will be able to track their progress by generating individual reports.
Vocabulary acquisition is a requirement of the Common Core State Standards and is necessary for the development of overall reading comprehension. This program will be an effective tool to help bridge some gaps for my struggling readers.
This project also includes Tikki Tikki Tembo and some other reading materials that I have selected for use in the classroom. All of the materials will support the teaching and learning of fourth grade literacy content standards. Additionally I have requested a set of books that addresses the problem of bullying among children. This book set will support our (SEL) social and emotional learning initiative.
