The students at my school are amazing. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic many of them are struggling to meet benchmark. Luckily, they have teachers that work hard to help them succeed. As a literacy coach I collaborate with these teachers often in PLCs where we discuss how we can best support the needs of all learners. They are passionate about student learning. They set goals and work hard to move student's growth towards mastery of those goals. I also support them in their classrooms through coaching cycles so the students receive the best instruction. One thing the teachers are doing to help these students impacted by Covid-19 is undergoing LETRS training. The teachers are excited about what they are learning and want to use their new knowledge to instruct their students. They feel that these strategies can make a difference in closing the gap in their student's learning. However, it is difficult to administer these activities without the proper materials.
Help me support the needs of my staff with supplies that they can use to implement what they are learning from LETRS with their students.
My Project
These resources will allow teachers to better implement the strategies that they are currently being taught in the LETRS training. The jumbo pop tubes help students with their blending and segmenting of words. The magnetic letter are used in conjunction with an alphabet arc. The alphabet arc is a good way for children to have visual and multi-sensory support to practice blending, segmenting and auditory processing. The pop it fidget toys help in phoneme grapheme mapping. The self adhesive dots will be used to make grapheme word mats. All these items will be added to a basket to become a tool kit for instruction.
Teachers will have the materials to implement the researched based instruction with their students to improve their phonemic awareness and phonics skills to become better readers and writers.
With the best instruction, we can hope to bridge the gaps that are apparent in the student's academic learning.
