Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from high poverty, low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of them live in low income apartments. 100% of them qualify for government assistance and the federal free lunch program. Many of them are ELL learnners and speak English as a second language. However, these barriers do not discourage their love for learning!

These students come to school every day excited and ready to improve their reading and math skills.

Their parents are very concerned about their children's education to provide them a better life. Although they are disadvantaged in so many ways, you would never know it by their positive attitudes and eagerness to learn.

My Project

Many of our students are English Language Learners. It is very difficult for these children to learn and master English when speaking Spanish at home. These materials will assist with helping students to master critical reading skills while working in small groups with teachers and tutors and in whole group instruction.

The skills we want to concentrate on for these students include fluency, comprehension, and sight word recognition.

I'm requesting Close Reading Early Readers, English Language Develop Activity Cards to support my instruction. The First 100 Sight Talking Boards can read the sight words to students and be sent home to help parents master English, as well. Close reading passages will be used to test fluency and comprehension in small groups, giving students confidence with reading. The Picture It! Daily Comprehension Activities will be in a center to help these students put a picture with words for deeper understanding.
