Little Things that Make a Big Difference

My students need a class set of scissors, extra dry erase markers, and a 15 inch paper cutting board.

I teach 20 brilliant fourth graders at a Title 1 school in North Carolina. Our school has 67% of our students receiving free and reduced lunches.

We have so many families just trying to make ends meet that it's hard to ask parents to donate supplies that seem really expensive to a lot of them. We often put items on our Back to School materials lists that don't make it in to school. Two of the things that usually don't ever come in are scissors and dry erase markers. Many of our kids have no scissors at home, so some of our homework assignments don't get done. And dry erase markers are even worse! Our students each have a small white board that they keep at their desks. We use these "quick response boards" during just about every subject. The students all answer one question on their boards at the same time. I can see what every kid is thinking in the span of about 15 seconds.

However, dry erase markers run at about a dollar a piece, and rarely are sold one at a time. A lot of our parents skip buying dry erase markers because they don't have five dollars to buy the package of three or four markers. A few students end up supplying the whole class. If we're very frugal, I can make our supply last about half the year. After thinking about how to fix this problem, I began wondering if someone would help us by granting us the money. I know it seems like I'm asking for a lot of little things, but I don't know where the money will come from to pay for them. Your gift would be extremely helpful! Finally, I could really use a new paper cutter. We do tons of games and activities that need cutting. I've given up wasting my time on the paper cutter I have and just cutting things out with scissors. This makes things come out more sloppy and it takes forever.

Would you be willing to help us? Sometimes it seem so unfair that these great kids have to go without things like scissors because money is just needed other places. It breaks my heart to see them bringing in their school supplies a few at a time because that's all their parents can afford. If it breaks your heart too, would you be willing to donate? This small donation makes a big difference! The students feel that their education is very important because someone gave money for them to learn. Thanks for reading this and considering us!
