This year we are back in the classroom under some pretty uncertain circumstances. At the elementary level, our district is face to face, five days a week, and as a teacher, I am concerned daily about the health and safety of my students and their families, as well as the education of my young kindergarteners.
I want to keep my classroom as safe as possible, while at the same time provide my students with an effective learning environment.
My students are very excited to become readers! They are really starting to take off with their reading skills, and I'd like to be able to provide them with more leveled books. Due to the Covid-19 guidelines, we are not allowed to share supplies, so I know the students would love to have books they could use.
My Project
These individual early reading books will be used by my students during small group time to allow for skill building practice. The phonics-based books support our systematic process of teaching children to read by blending known phonemes to form words. Reading books leads to more confident readers!
Using phonics-based books allows students to be successful in their reading.
It also provides practice in the necessary letter sounds and blending skills needed in order to read. Most importantly, the kids enjoy reading when they have books in their hands! Adding more books to our classroom library will allow for each student to have their own book each week, since there is no sharing of supplies.
I have also requested markers in various skin tones. My students spend more time at their tables this year in order to maintain social distancing guidelines. One of the activities they love doing is drawing and coloring with markers. Having the added colors in skin tones will open the possibilities of their imagination and ability to represent themselves more accurately.
