Little Readers Becoming Great Writers Through Great Texts

Help me give my students the easy texts they need to continue their journey to being fluent readers. The non-fiction texts are even more important with today's high-stakes testing centered on non-fiction comprehension.

My Students

This year's class is no different than any other year, in the sense that it's filled with unique learners of all ability levels and learning styles.

My students this year are LOVING reading the leveled texts I have in my classroom library.

From the hilarious fiction titles like "No David" and "How to Catch a Monster" to the excellent non-fiction titles that Scholastic and other publishers are (finally) producing for young, developing readers - my kids love them all! These texts are becoming even more important in my classroom because of the Lucy Calkins writing curriculum that I am (and a number of other teachers are) implementing. Each writing lesson has the kids looking in the books they're reading to find "craft moves" that professional authors and illustrators are using so they can incorporate them into their own stories.

The issue with this love of reading this year (and all the years prior) is that the books are wearing out due to their expanded use. Putting the correct leveled texts in my students' hands has never been more important to my teaching and their development as it is today. My "Book Hospital" is overflowing with texts that need repairs.

My Project

These leveled texts will help to replace the overused (good thing!) texts needing repairs that are filling up my "Book Hospital." Quality fiction and non-fiction texts at kids' actual reading levels are essential to them not only becoming better readers, but better writers in our daily writers' workshop lessons.

Kids today are seeing how wonderful literature can be, and today's texts are relating to our early readers more and more.

The paperback versions of texts just don't last as long as my kids need them to, and I need replacements to keep up with their demand. Please help! Thank you!
