I teach in a rural community at an elementary school that receives targeted Title I support. My first grade students are so much fun to work with. They are so excited to be at school! They love working with friends, interacting with classmates and staff, creating projects, and engaging in hands-on activities. They're curious, enthusiastic, and definitely energetic! I have heard the comment, "This is the best day ever!" numerous times, and first graders mean it! They absolutely love to explore, create, and learn.
My Project
First graders are active! They are constantly on the go, and if you've ever been in a first grade classroom, you know it's a busy hub of conversation, exploration, and lots and lots of questions and stories! Even with LOTS of activities throughout the day, there are still a number of students who have a hard time working at their seat for long periods of time. Fidgety students can create problems not only for themselves but sometimes for the students sitting around them.
My students are always asking to move around the room- to switch seats, sit on the floor, move to a stool- anything to move their bodies!
Our class wants more opportunities for movement. My students would love to use stability balls and wobble chairs. Both seats provide a safe alternative to our regular classroom chairs, allowing students to wobble and release some of their energy to maintain a better focus during lessons. Small rockers would be used as alternative seating for reading and writing around the room, allowing students to wiggle and focus better on reading or writing a story. Bouncy bands (attached to the legs of a chair) will allow some of the students in our class to safely bounce out some of their energy while sitting at their desk and participating in activities. The seating we have requested will help students in our class move, and in turn, it will help create a successful learning environment for EVERYONE in our class.
