First graders are active! They are constantly on the go, and if you've ever been in a first grade classroom, you know it's a busy hub of conversation, exploration, and lots and lots of questions and stories! Lower elementary teachers are constantly changing from one activity to the next in an effort to keep their students' interest and focus. An hour long math block might consist of modeling by the teacher, hands-on practice or partner work, independent practice, flashcards, and games to help teach or a review a concept. Even with LOTS of activities throughout the day, there are still a number of students who have a hard time working at their seat for long periods of time. That's understandable! As adults, many of us have a hard time sitting for a long time, and it's not healthy for our bodies. Fidgety students can create problems not only for themselves but sometimes for everyone sitting around them. Our class would love to be able to use balance/stability balls, rockers, wobble chairs, lap trays, and bouncy bands to create a more successful learning environment for EVERYONE in our class. With guidance and support, students would be able to choose seating appropriate to their learning needs during different blocks throughout the day. A student who struggles to focus during math might choose to sit on a wobble chair or balance his feet on a bouncy band instead of tapping a pencil on a desk, poking a neighbor, hanging out of his chair etc. A student who struggles to sit and write at her desk might choose to sit on the floor during Daily 5 and write on a lap tray. By utilizing these tools, our class has the ability to greatly improve student learning and behavior!
