Little Ladies: Books and Journals for Growing Girls
Help me give my students books and journals to pair with our mentoring program for our girls who are at risk of not achieving academically and socially.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach Special Education Behavior Improvement at a Title I elementary school where over 70% of our students are living below the poverty line, receiving free or reduced priced lunch daily. My class has a mixed student list ranging from first grade to fifth grade. Each student has specific behavior improvement needs that are being worked on everyday.
My students are bright and eager to learn but need some extra help with their social skills in order to be able to learn with their classmates successfully.
Our major focuses are social skills and bridging the educational gaps that can happen when a student is having behavior problems in the classroom. I believe I teach a special group of people that grow and get more skilled all the time.
My Project
Our school is taking on a challenge that will change the lives of our young ladies! We are starting a specific mentoring program for young ladies on our campus that are at risk for not achieving their full potential academically, falling into disserving patterns socially, and other risk factors that could hinder their educational success in the future. Each girl is paired with a mentor who will work with the girls on topics such as courage, self-love, self-esteem, influence, empathy, honesty, and self-worth/perception which are all topics in the books we've selected. Each student will also receive a journal and pen to use during each session.
