My Students
The 4th and 5th grade students in our school come from diverse backgrounds - both socially and economically. We are known as a "School That Shines", and in many ways we do.
I teach music once a week in a self-contained classroom, and offer hands-on learning of all the ingredients that help make a student a functional musician through listening, performing and moving to encourage trying new things.
This includes, but is not limited to the nitty-gritty of note names on a music staff to analyzing form and content, composing using music technology, and performing through singing, playing and movement.
Because of this emphasis on life-long learning, the students are always eager to try something new. The smiles I see tell me volumes about their interests.
My Project
I've taken a fork in the road for the music classes I teach by incorporating guitars as the means to have a great hands-on experience making music. The inclusion of ukuleles means that the younger students or students with smaller hands can also join in the fun and joy of making music with others who play the guitar.
Right now, I only have ten guitars, which means I have to ask students to share instruments during music class.
With the addition of ten ukuleles, all students will have an opportunity to play together as they learn to rock along with their favorite music in a setting that encourages risk-taking, but also sets the stage for them as life-long learners.
