My students need engaging manipulatives to strengthen the muscles in their hands and fingers to help develop the fine motor skills of writing legibly, cutting neatly, and coloring within the lines.
Our Title I school is located in a very rural community in Northwestern, Pennsylvania where we welcome many students and families with a low socioeconomic status.
It is always a joy to watch students arrive in the classroom for the first time, they are often wide-eyed and nervous about what the future holds in this new place called "kindergarten." Some cry and hide behind their parent, some giggle and shyly tell me their name, some are so ready and excited their meander right in ready to find their desk with a gigantic smile that spreads from ear to ear.
I want what they see when they arrive in the classroom for the first time to cultivate in their young mind a unique love of learning that will last their entire lifetime. I want them to see a variety of colorful, engaging learning activities that will get them excited for the year of learning that is ahead of them and also make their parents feel comfortable and confident in the learning experiences their child will have during the time they spend in my classroom.
My Project
Students arrive in Kindergarten with a wide variety of experiences writing with pencils, cutting with scissors, and coloring with crayons. At the end of the year it is my goal to have all students writing sentences legibly, cutting out complex shapes, and coloring neatly within the lines. In order to achieve this goal, many students need to have their muscles in their hands and fingers strengthened. The engaging materials in this project will help students do just that as they curiously explore and build. As their muscles get stronger, their writing, cutting and color skills will develop to a place where they can be ready for first grade at the end of the school year.
