Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students currently experience art in short bursts—about once a month (and sometimes even less) through a one-hour Art Heritage lesson. While these moments are valuable and appreciated, they simply aren’t enough to nurture the creativity that lives in our classroom every day. Outside of those lessons, students have very limited access to materials, which means their ideas often stop at imagination instead of becoming something they can see and share.

With consistent access to art supplies, students would be able to express themselves more freely, build confidence in their abilities, and engage in meaningful, hands-on learning throughout the entire year.

One of our most impactful projects happens during our reading and writing unit, where students research a famous artist, write a biography, and then recreate a piece inspired by their work. This year, it was incredible to watch students take ownership of their learning and pour themselves into their creations. However, many ran into the same challenge: we simply didn’t have enough supplies or the right materials to support the level of detail and creativity they envisioned. Students had to scale back their ideas or share limited resources, which took away from the full experience. In my cart, I have acrylic paints, oil pastels, and watercolor paint sets that would allow students to create high-quality pieces. Having a wider range of art supplies readily available would allow every student to fully bring their vision to life and deepen both their artistic expression and academic learning.

In addition to these, I have some of the classroom staple items such as paint brushes, acrylic markers, crayons, and scissors that would allow my students to create more frequently without having to pay for these supplies out of my own pocket.
