As an occupational therapist in a NYC public school, I work exclusively with students who struggle to meet the demands of the current school environment. Most of my students experience great barriers to learning due to various disabling conditions such as autism, ADHD, emotional disturbances and learning disabilities. They often have problems communicating, difficulties properly expressing their emotions, decreased attention to academic tasks, and delayed sensory motor development.
Despite their limitations, they are a highly motivated and hard working bunch who are always striving to make their teachers proud.
My Project
Having fun (aka "working") with my students is the highlight of my day. I get to play, color, write and create with them as part of my job to foster their developmental growth in my school.
It is an absolute blessing to be alongside these amazing kids as they explore their creativity and let their imaginations fly!
What makes my job even more amazing is that I get to figure out ways to make this happen for kids that may not otherwise get the opportunity to do so. Many of my students have impairments which make typical childhood creative play like writing and illustrating stories, coloring, cutting, crafting, and sensory play difficult and often frustrating for them. With the help of a few simple therapy tools such as adapted paper, slant boards, weighted pencils, laminated paper etc., those barriers are removed and the hurdles lowered in order to allow them to reach their full creative potential!
