This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are an elementary performing arts charter school. This is a school of choice. Our students are here because the traditional classroom model isn't working for them. They light up when we are able to integrate the arts with academics. As their music teacher I have the pleasure of putting instruments in their hands and helping them connect academics with the arts. This is a time where the kids explore the world through music. We connect music to cultures, mathematics, science, and of course self expression. My students thirst for this opportunity to play instruments that they would otherwise never be able to touch or play outside of school.
My Project
My students are always asking me to teach them guitar. As an elementary music teacher this is a challenge for the kindergarten and lower grades. Their fingers are just so tiny. Ukulele is a great instrument for small hands to play and learn about stringed instruments.
The boomwhackers are fun and unique way to teach melody and teamwork to all grade levels.
Students will work together to complete a song by contributing their part of a larger musical puzzle. This is very much what a band or orchestra would do.
Just thinking about their smiles is making me excited!
