Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 5th graders in an urban elementary school in Oklahoma City. The students in our school are 100% free breakfast and lunches. They are from an extremely low socioeconomic area, but are eager to learn. My students are special because they are all similar with the same cultural background. English is their second language but I never tire of their accent! They are already teaching me more than I could ever teach them. They are creative, special, grateful, and happy.
I was born in Texas, and as a Mexican American, I relate to them and feel a special bond to them as a group.
My students have so many needs that school supplies, uniforms, and books are all put on the back burner in their homes. However, I have seen them time and time again share pencils, crayons, and markers with those in our class who don't have any! I feel blessed to teach this special class this year.
My Project
Flexible seating such as bean bags, allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times they can choose to go to the classroom reading center on a big comfy rug instead of laying or sitting on the floor. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clip board.
Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them.
My students have asked for a reading center! They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk. Not only will our new rug define a "reading center", but it will add much needed color to the environment of our classroom. Our classroom is the nicest place most of my students come to each day, so I try and make it as inviting and comfortable as possible with soft lighting, lamps, and tasteful decor.
