Little Bodies, Big Feelings: Creating a Social Emotional Library
Help me give my students a resource library of books focused on social/emotional development and self-regulation. These books teach children about feelings and social relationships in a fun and engaging way while helping them develop their social/emotional vocabulary!
The PreK, kindergarten, and first graders in my two schools, come from a wide socioeconomic range with many of the students having experienced many stressors and trauma in their lives. Many experience food insecurity and unstable living situations and many have difficulty identifying their feelings and regulating them. Their challenges with regulating their emotions becomes an obstacle to learning.
By providing a wide range of reading materials that teach the children about their feelings and how to manage them, we can help them to develop the ability to regulate their emotions and develop skills for managing the wide range of intense feelings they experience.
By doing so, they become more available for learning.
I love how inquisitive and open-minded students are at this age. They are eager to learn, share and try new things. I hope that they find these books help them to understand their feelings and give them the language to communicate about their feelings.
My Project
These engaging books will be used both individually with children who are experiencing big feelings and for whole group lessons aimed at teaching children about their feelings and how to manage them.
When young children are having big feelings, they often cannot talk about these feelings either because the feelings are so big and overwhelming or because they do not have the language to describe what they feel.
By providing stories about feelings, children can learn about feelings in a safe and experiential way.
Classroom teachers will use these books to teach children about feelings and how to regulate them as well as social relationships and how to navigate them. The books will be used as a jumping off point for stimulating conversation on these very important topics.
