Little Bits STEM Projects: Creativity Paired With Accessibility
Help me give my students STEM materials that will allow them to develop scientific reasoning while they listen and talk, developing collaborative habits. Students will use Little Bits to extend their understanding of basic electricity in creative ways.
I teach a 4th-5th split at a Title One school. My students are amazing, and curious and want to learn. Many of them have dreams of what they want to become someday, and we work hard teaching the steps to get there. I believe that working hard can be fun and can feel rewarding, as we create engaging tasks.
One area we work on in my class is peer support and group work.
Learning to listen and speak in partnerships, small groups and with the whole class is a challenge, that we meet through authentic activities.
My Project
Fifth graders learn about electricity, and Little Bits gives them multiple ways to interact and be successful, as well as an opportunity to be creative! The kits contain multiple functional items, which allow students to put together unique powered devices and work through problems. It takes student learning to a new level, as they experiment in a safe yet challenging way, with multiple entry points. We will use them as partners, to also allow for language development and to encourage brainstorming.
Students will work as partners to plan, create, test and fine-tune their projects, using speaking and listening to work together to make their object function.
They will learn to work through obstacles, and to persevere.
