Do you remember having to sit down to write a story in class and being afraid to spell something wrong or make a mistake? Most of my students that come to 2nd grade are excited about being able to read and write. However, my class is a mix of typical 2nd grade students and students with special needs.
Many times students with special needs see school as a struggle, and I want to encourage them to take risks in a fun and supportive classroom.
All students in my class have different goals that they are working towards. It might be to independently write a complete sentence or to write an opinion piece. Regardless of their goal, seeing a smile on my student's face when they reach their goal is a beautiful thing.
My Project
In my class, I encourage all students to be creative and take risks as writers. I use a writers workshop model that has students writing and working on writing goals on a daily basis.
In order for my class of 2nd graders to realize their full potential as writers, I want to immerse them in literature that not only inspires them but shows them the process of writing.
Having appropriate sized journals that students can write in neatly and be able to erase without destroying their work is important to 2nd graders. Most notebooks that are appropriate for 2nd grade students to write in at the beginning of the year are too expensive for students to bring in as supplies.
My class is a mix of regular education students and students with special needs. The literature I am asking for shows students the process of writing, teaches students how to be respectful of others' work, and how to work independently to be the best writers they can be.
