Hello! I am a kindergarten teacher in a wonderful school in Durham, North Carolina. Many of our students come from low-income homes, and they are some of the sweetest, smartest, and most interesting students you will ever find! If you ask any kindergartener what they love best about school, chances are they'll say playtime! And rightly so! For kindergarteners, especially those who have never been to a school setting before, playtime or free centers can be one of the most important times of the day. During these times, children have the chance to learn sharing skills, interaction skills, and most importantly social skills. Children learn to share with each other, talk to each other, listen to each other, compromise with each other, problem solve, and learn how to interact with those around them. Some examples of free centers might be puzzles, blocks, play-doh, housekeeping, computer, or dress-up. There is one very important center I would like to add to my center rotation: a painting station. Arts and crafts are one of the integral parts of a kindergarten day. Although we use crayons, markers, and colored pencils everyday, painting continues to remain our favorite art activity. Besides developing kids' artistic ability, painting also can be extremely beneficial for children. Using paint requires gross motor control and fine motor control. Children use both large and small muscles to hold a paintbrush and move it with precision. They also have to be careful and work neatly in order to keep the paint on their paper and off themselves. Probably the most obvious skill learned by painting is color recognition and the realization of color blending and new color creation. There is no more teachable way to learn that red and yellow make orange than by doing it! Not only would this painting center immediately become one of the favorite free centers, it would also serve as a spot for physical, mental, and social development.
