As the district English Language Development specialist, I support K-12 students in their acquisition of the English language. My students come from all over the world and are a diverse population of students. They speak a variety of native languages such as; Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Vietnamese, Palauan, Urdu, and many more! The primary school in which I am assigned serves approximately 475 students in grades K-5. We are a Title 1 school and over 60% of the students receive free or reduced lunch.
I feel very strongly that a global world view is equally important as our connection to the natural world.
It is my goal is to provide authentic learning experiences for my students and to do so, it is critical that my students feel safe and welcome in our classroom space.
My Project
As the English Language Development specialist, I will be responsible for a diverse group of English language learners in grades K-12. My students will come to me with varying academic ability levels as well as cultural backgrounds. In our classroom, I want to celebrate diversity and individuality by providing my students with many opportunities to grow and be successful learners no matter what their unique needs may be.
Help me give my students books that will allow them to celebrate the diversity in our classroom, community, and world!
In order to be successful learners, it is important that my students feel accepted and supported. A great way to reinforce those feelings and express my support is through literature that represents and celebrates all. Using these books during read-alouds, in language-rich lesson plans, as well as including them in our classroom library will allow my students to recognize themselves, feel acceptance, and celebrate the beauty in diversity.
