Literature in Film: High Schoolers Study Lit & Life

My Project

My students love stories, and I love to teach them stories. Reading and writing--that's what we do in my classroom. And deep thinking! Along with the literature, poetry, and texts we read to explore and analyze, I love to give my high school students the chance to watch and think deeply about literature and ideas they can see in film.

Putting individual video players in the hands of my students gives them the ability to spend time both in and out of the classroom exploring and analyzing literature in film.

As part of my regular language arts class, I can include "movie" homework among my assignments, encouraging students to watch and wrestle through films that have an impact on our culture and can help them think more deeply about life, such as Citizen Kane, Schindler's List, Just Mercy, and Reel Injun. This tool is a viable way to deliver content to my students, whether they are studying during remote or in-person learning.

During the school year, on most nights I ask students to read their novels at home, but I like to break that up with films for them to watch, analyze, and learn from. I've engaged kids in this activity in the past, and it was very well-received. In some cases, whole families watched the films and discussed their significance! These days, however, our student computers don't have the capacity to receive disks. Instead, I would like to use these individual video players, which are simple and versatile, and which would enable students to borrow DVDs from my library and avoid copyright issues. In addition to the texts we read, this project will help my students explore literature through film--an experience I am eager to provide for them.
