Help me give my students books to support their social emotional health, to help them embrace their culture and individual differences, and to provide them pride in who they are and where they come from.
Hi, My name is Ms. K, and I am a kindergarten teacher. My students live in an impoverished suburb outside of Washington DC.
Of my deserving students, some are immigrants, some are refugees, some are homeless, some are military children, some have their own story to tell, and all are very deserving of a powerful education at our Title 1 school.
These amazing children are in need of high quality, well written books both in their classroom, and in their "book baggies" which go to-and-from home, then back to school. These books become lost very quickly and often do not make it back to school. The children at my elementary have little experience with books, and so we request your help.
My Project
Multicultural books, such as those found through Scholastic, can provide me as their teacher the opportunity to capitalize on the students prior knowledge, experiences, interests, and honorable differences in order to build strong, high quality lessons.
These amazing children are in need of high quality, well written books to support their education and to further their interests in reading and learning.
I yearn for students to open their books and to be able to identify with the characters, the plot, the setting, etc. It is proven that children learn best from those things in which they can connect with.
