Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach amazing 5th graders in a small agricultural town in Central California called Guadalupe. We are a Title I district with a strong push for literacy. My students love to read, but sometimes do not have access to literature that reflects their background and culture. The Last Cuentista, by Donna Barba, is a highly engaging children's novel that interweaves Mexican folklore with science fiction. Donna Barba grew up in a small agricultural town in Central California, only a few hours away from Guadalupe. The Last Cuentista is the 2022 Newberry Medal and Pura Belpré Award winner. To show my students the success of someone like them in the literary field is an opportunity I cannot pass up.

My students deserve to read engaging, award-winning stories from and about people who share their cultural and linguistic background.

The Last Cuentista is a story about a young and heroic Latina girl, Petra Peña, who is on a journey to a new planet while the rest of the world is ending. She also may be the only person left who knows all the cuentos (stories) from history. This book teaches students that diversity, culture, heritage, language, and stories are worth preserving.

My hope is that I can provide all of my students a copy of this book so we can read it together. Since many of my students read below grade-level, it is important to expose ALL of them to grade-level text through shared core literature.

The Last Cuentista is a story that all my students should have access to and would be excited to share the reading experience together.

I have also requested a Teachers Pay Teachers gift card so I can purchase a Common Core Aligned novel study and engaging lessons for the book. These resources from Teachers Pay Teachers will provide my students with discussion topics, comprehension practice, and vocabulary activities.

Thank you for your consideration!
