Literature Circles with the Hunger Games Series

My Students

Read what you enjoy! My students actually enjoy reading. They want to read literature that's current and relevant to their generation. Their first choice is the Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games.

I teach English in Northeast Philadelphia.

My students are 9th and 10th graders with varying academic and reading levels. Many of my students are very interested in literature, but prefer to have more ownership in the novels and stories they read in school. I have surveyed my students on current titles they may be interested in reading. Overwhelmingly, they chose Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games.

My Project

I am requesting a classroom set of Suzanne Collin's The Hunger Games, with an additional 5 copies for our classroom library in case students are interested in borrowing a book. In English 1 class students are embarking on their first Literature Circle experience with peers. With Literature Circles, students will read and discuss a novel with 4 classmates. As a group, students will meet on a regular schedule to discuss their reading and topics relevant to their novel. Their group meetings are designed to be open, personal, and engaging.

This project is so important because it is honoring students' voice.

As an educator, I was humbled by the enthusiasm my students showed in their interest in reading this particular novel. It is only right for me try to bring their hopes of reading a current and meaningful text to fruition. With donations from DonorsChoose my students will be able satisfy their hunger for reading with Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games.
