My students need 15 copies each of 6 books that they can connect to during literature circles, as well as learning story elements and character traits.
Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? Some my students have not yet discovered books that capture them as active readers. I would really like to see this happen and I feel that Sharon Flake's books could really get them excited about reading.
I have 60 students on various reading levels.
Majority of the students come from various cultural backgrounds. Some students are motivated about reading but not enough students really like reading. I would really like to see my students enjoy what they are reading and not just read because I say so but because they want to and enjoy it.
My Project
I have selected books that focus on several topics such as self esteem, bullying, and overcoming tragedies. The students will have discussion about the books and create various projects based on the books they reading in their reading groups. An example of project based on the book would be: to create a collage inspired by the novel, find or create your own pictures from magazines, representing the main characters, their hopes, dreams,and fears, and explain your piece in a brief journal that you turn in with the collage.
I believe that children need to be aware of the importance of self-esteem.
They need to know that it is wrong to bully others. They need to know that no matter what terrible things happen in your life you overcome the problem and excel.
