This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Never Give Up!" is something you will hear my students chanting in the classroom throughout the year. I teach second grade reading in a Title I school, in Washington DC, where all of my students receive free lunch. The challenges my students face as seven-year-olds are surreal; however, they consistently rise to meet these challenges head on. At the beginning of the school year, we discuss how learning to read might not be easy, and there are going to be times we want to quit. No matter what, we need to make sure we "Never Give Up!"
My students beat the odds every single day.
Statistics says that the majority of my students won't be reading on grade level when they enter third grade and will continue to fall further and further behind. This is why I think it is so important that my students build a solid foundation in literacy. Despite these statistics, ninety percent of my students leave second grade reading at or above grade level. They are closing the achievement gap and showing everyone how important it is to "Never Give Up!"
My Project
My students are ready to start leading their own discussions about books. I am excited for them to take this new independent step in their reading. We are going to start literature circles in our class. This means that small groups of students will read the same chapter book together and discuss the book as they read.
I am excited to see my students' comprehension and speaking/listening skills grow with these new literature circles.
This project will allow us the resources needed to begin literature circles. I have chosen several sets of beginner chapter books for my students to read.
