Reading can change a life. It can help you escape; it can broaden your world; it can help you learn. I want my students to experience reading a book that does that for them. My students need a wide variety of books to choose from.
My students attend an urban middle school, in Washington State.
The surrounding neighborhood is poor and 86% of the student population receives free or reduced student lunch. The student population is diverse with over forty different languages are spoken, and most students are either immigrants or are first generation Americans.
My Project
In my classroom, there are many levels of readers- anywhere from a third grade level to twelfth grade level. It is important to have good quality and recently published books to entice students to read. My students need current and engaging books. By having a variety of books, students have many choices.
Having a wide variety of choices will entice students to read books, and since there will be more than one copy available, literature circles can be formed.
Students love to read books together. By reading together, students will learn how to work together and have discussions about their books. By learning to work together, this will help them once my students go out into the workforce.
