My Students

My students come from all over the world. They have different socioeconomic backgrounds and their home lives are as diverse as their tastes in music. For some, their educational backgrounds are fraught with disruption and turmoil, while others have been honors students since they were in fifth grade.

The unique diversity of my students makes having resources available to my students imperative to their education.

Daily, students work in groups to analyze fiction and non-fiction class texts chosen for them based on curriculum, create digital projects using Chromebooks, posters, and other creative assignments, and much, much more. While the curriculum is ever evolving to reflect the diversity of the student body, that change can be slow moving. This is why it is important for me to have available for my students popular fiction books for independent reading.

My Project

The addition of current and popular fiction titles to my classroom library will allow my students access to literature that reflects their interests and personalities. They spend so much time reading and analyzing literature that is chosen for them that when they have an opportunity to choose something to read interdependently, I like to offer current and popular titles.

The cultural diversity of my student population also makes it imperative that the literature offered in my classroom library provides students with an opportunity to see themselves and their classmates reflected on the pages they read.

By seeing themselves and their peers reflected on the pages of the books they read, students are exposed to new cultures and experiences they might not otherwise experience as the curriculum catches up with popular fiction.
