My Project

I absolutely LOVE teaching my freshmen and senior literature and composition classes. Most of my students don't have an extensive background when it comes to literary analysis, so the courses and concepts can be intimidating.

However, over the years, I have come to realize how effective creative assignments are for building the analytical skills of my students in a very natural, low-stress5v way.

I have utilized "art journals" within my courses for three years now; within these journals, my students complete analysis assignments (journal entries) related to pieces of media, poetry, short stories, physical artwork, and novels. Some entries are very structured, some are not. But all involve creative, independent thinking.

These journal entries get my students thinking and analyzing on a daily basis. They are wonderful for student engagement and buy-in, and they have really helped my students hone their analytical abilities throughout the school year. As a majority, students really love the practice of using these journals and view them as very beneficial to their growth throughout the class. To see their literary analysis abilities grow and be expressed through their artistic journal entries is an amazing thing! Every student's work within their entries is a true reflection of their individual self, thinking, and efforts.
