Because of your generosity, each of my students had their own official \"AP LIT ART JOURNAL\" where they took notes throughout the year and did the majority of their analyses.\r\n\r\nUsing true \"art paper\" made it possible for us to watercolor on a regular basis, and utilize other mediums/art forms such as oil pastels, collages, interactive foldables, etc. My students were more motivated to dig into the pieces of literature we studied because they knew we would take some sort of creative angle to breaking it down versus simply jumping straight into formal writing on the text.\r\n\r\nThe art journals especially helped my weaker and less confident students develop their thinking before jumping into writing. They gained confidence with the content through our art journal activities, and entered formal writing assignments with all their \"thinking\" essentially pre-planned for them. This allowed more students to be truly successful in my class, on the AP exam, and just in developing their analytical reading/writing/thinking skills altogether. These texts have opened up so many rich opportunities for learning. Through them, students are developing essential literacy skills—like analyzing character development, identifying themes, making inferences, and supporting their ideas with text evidence. Even more importantly, they're learning to connect literature to their own lives, building empathy and critical thinking along the way. Whether we're discussing symbolism in a novel or writing thoughtful responses to a poem, reading in our classroom is always interactive and rooted in discussion, creativity, and discovery.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding things to witness has been the way certain students have connected deeply with specific titles. A few reluctant readers have surprised us all by becoming enthusiastic participants during book talks and group reading sessions. One student in particular, who used to shy away from reading altogether, now arrives each morning eager to continue a story she says \"feels like it was written just for her.\" These books have truly given our students mirrors to see themselves and windows into new perspectives.
