This project is fully funded

I am an 8th grade english teacher in a school in rural North Carolina. Many of my students are from homes that value education but lack the resources to send the kids ready to start school. As a result, so most of them still read below grade level. To help improve their fluency, I would like students to read books on tape and then listen to themselves. Students would begin by reading short books and move up to books that are on their grade level. Students would read the book to themselves, out loud to peers and finally out loud to me before putting it on tape. After putting it on tape, students would have a chance to listen to themselves and make improvements before a final recording is made. The final recording and book will be given to a class of students who have struggling readers and those students will have the privledge of listening to the recording and following along in the book, enabling them to become better readers. This project is a gift of reading that keeps on giving!! I would like to work on this project all year and have a culminating activity in March to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday. Your gift of books, tapes and tape recorders will be supplemented by discounted books I purchase at the library book sales each year. This project will allow my students to improve their reading skills and will allow them to take ownership of their improvement. They will also be able to pass on the gift of reading.
