My Students
Although many of my students walk in the door without food, a warm coat, and an assurance of safety, they never cease to amaze me with their capacity for learning, strength of character, and persistence in the face of challenges.
The Title I school where I teach is a remarkable place where my students come in every day from all walks of life.
They are hard workers whose parents diligently strive to give them access to opportunities that were not always available to them. As their teacher, it is my job to facilitate a safe learning environment in which all students are given the tools they need to succeed.
Providing consistent access to literature in both their first language and in English will give my students the opportunity to engage with their learning in meaningful ways. It will also give students the ability to work at their own pace in an interactive way that supports their own learning. My school is a phenomenal collective of both compassionate educators and the determined students who inspire them. Thank you so much for supporting such a wonderful group of students!
My Project
My students will use a combination of books in Spanish and English to apply new literacy skills and immerse themselves in uncharted literary territory. Students will be able to continue to read and learn in their native language, making connections to their diverse languages and cultures. Although Spanish is not the only native language in my classroom, it is the most notable and, therefore, a jumping off point for creating a classroom library that celebrates the diverse linguistic and cultural needs of my students.
This project will change my students' lives for the better by giving them access to literature that acknowledges and celebrates their cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
It will give them the opportunity to personalize their learning and, as a result, foster a love of reading, both in Spanish and English.
