Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach senior English at a very diverse school. My students are all from low-income families and 99% of our student population is on free or reduced lunch. However, my students do now allow their adverse circumstances to affect their academic performance. My students are incredibly inquisitive. They ask real world questions and are always concerned about their futures either in the job market or getting into college.
My students' sense of loyalty and determination is unrivaled.
My students yearn to help their families and realize their education can be a vehicle to improving their family's quality of life. Many of my students have jobs in order to contribute to their family's financial well-being. I am awestruck by my students' ability to balance their work, home and school lives. My students have an incredible work ethic and are tenacious in the face of sometimes overwhelming odds.
My students questions are focused on connecting academia with real world scenarios. They yearn to make our planet a better place for everyone. My students are my heroes. They teach me something profound each day and inspire me to be a better person.
My Project
My classroom will incorporate lesson plans which include graphic novels. We will use two graphic novels, one for "Beowulf" and one for "Macbeth." The students will also study the traditional text, and a translation of both traditional texts. The graphic novels will add a depth of understanding to traditional readings and give visual learners a chance to interact with the texts. We will also be watching clips from the film version of "Beowulf" and a video recording of "Macbeth." The use of multimedia for the contemporary student allows for an enriching experience. We will be comparing and contrasting all versions of the texts, films/plays and will work on small group projects and a Socratic Seminar--which is an excellent discussion platform for students.
My school has a diverse student population and interacting with multicultural literature is vital to students being fully engaged in the texts we read.
My students will be engaging texts with contemporary situations and characters. I have chosen texts with characters, themes, and plots that my students can find meaning with and opportunities for empathy. My students are going to connect with classic texts in new ways and also experience multicultural contemporary literature. My classroom will seek to synthesize, redefine and stretch the traditional literary canon (AKA the greatest hits) for the contemporary student.
