Help! We don't even have Microsoft Office! All of my lessons are on transparencies!

My students attend a struggling, Title 1 middle school in Southern California that serves students of low socioeconomic status.

They are bright, funny, and dedicated sixth-grade students, learning reading, writing, English Language Arts, and Social Studies in my classroom. After a technology survey and inventory in 2009, we were found to have one of the worst computer-to-student ratio in the state! Many of our computers don't even have Microsoft Office!

My Project

I am asking for a projector so I can help students access the amazing resources available to us on the computer. Students will learn how to navigate Microsoft Office, contribute responsibly to an online classroom community, and access the resources that are so readily available to their more affluent peers at other schools. With limited access to a computer lab, having a projector will allow students to learn some of these crucial skills from the comfort of our own classroom. It will allow me to differentiate my lessons for all learners, and incorporate different forms of media into the curriculum.

When I imagine my students beginning college- the first in their families- I want them to be prepared for its rigors and demands.

I picture them in their dorm rooms, furiously typing their essays and lab reports with ease. I picture them confidently and appropriately participating in online courses and discussions. I can just see them taking advantage of the resources and wealth of information out there! If this is a future that you can want to see as well, please support this project!
