This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach seventh, eighth and ninth grade Language Arts Reading to Special Education students. Many of my students are high energy and struggle with reading. They need books that will consistently engage them and leave them wanting more. When my students become engaged they bring many great ideas of their own to the daily class discussions and find it much easier and more enjoyable to learn. My students truly enjoy what I teach on a daily basis and I would love to help supply them with actual copies of the books they read. My school is a Title I high needs school.
My Project
Getting students interested in reading especially at the middle school and high school level is tough. With the New Black Panther movie coming out this week I have decided to motivate my students by reading the graphic novel.
By using this graphic novel I will be able to not only incorporate reading and writing but also science, technology and social studies into my lesson plans.
Having students work on research projects looking into the technology of the Black Panthers home country and the history and geography will help engage my students even more in the graphic novel. Hopefully then we can watch the Black Panther movie after we have completed the unit with the graphic novel to tie everything together.
