Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are so special because they have a thirst for learning and their can-do attitude shows how persistent and tenacious they are. They truly love being in school. Half of my class are emergent readers. They need material to gain phonemic awareness and the basics of letters and sounds. They are bilingual Spanish-speaking students who are behind academically and are starting to learn the letters and sounds in Spanish while in third grade. I want this group of students to catch up and be able to read very soon. I am teaching phonological awareness in both languages since the beginning of the year. The notebooks will help them to practice more at home and have the reading foundations. The Spanish books that I requested will promote and enhance the learning experience as well as fully immerse the students in a Spanish text-rich environment. Exposing students to familiar book titles (in Spanish) will help students to transfer that knowledge and will increase their Spanish comprehension. This group of students will have extra
in their journals to continue reviewing and practicing at home with support from their parents.
This extra practice will help me close the learning gaps due to a language barrier or a lack of former schooling.
