My students need a Literacy Library with titles including The Complete Poetry of Edgar Allan Poe, Percy Jackson, Call It Courage, The Fault in Our Stars, Tell the Wolves I'm Home, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Water for Elephants, The Only Road and Breaking Night.
My students live in a small, rural community in the upper peninsula of Michigan. Many of my students have known each other since the Preschool or Young-4's program. Here at our school students are able to take a few elective academic courses: Agricultural Science, Creative Writing, Choir, and Band, to name a few.
Our students are kind, hard-working, and have a desire for learning.
Every student strives to have Wolf P.R.I.D.E. - Positive, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Encouragement. These students deserve every opportunity to learn with newer and relevant classroom materials.
My Project
With the addition of a Literacy Library, students will have access to new books and classic novels. Not many students have access to books at home, and in school students mainly read books they are told to read. A Literacy Library could change all of that. I'm requesting a variety of books including The Complete Poetry of Edgar Allan Poe, Percy Jackson, Call It Courage, The Fault in Our Stars, Tell the Wolves I'm Home, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Water for Elephants, The Only Road and Breaking Night.
Pleasure reading helps increase a love of reading and a proficiency in reading.
With this Literacy Library, students will be able to choose a book they WANT to read. When students are reading a book they enjoy they are looking at, and experiencing, good writing. Constant and consistent reading not only improves students reading skills, but it also enhances students writing skills.
In my English classroom, students reading every Friday. If students could choose a book they like, they are more likely to enjoy the activity and rediscover a love of reading.
