Literacy, Learning, And Confidence Through A Deaf Ed. Library

My students need a variety of appealing reading material that include Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing characters, both fiction and non-fiction, across multiple genres. They also need several DVDs to facilitate their acquisition of American Sign Language.

We are a PK-12 public school in Mississippi. I am the only teacher in the district that serves children who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Hearing Impaired.

I am a new teacher and this is the first year that the district has ever had a teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing. Prior to this year, no services were available. We are also a very small town with no Deaf community. Due to a wide range of grade levels amongst my students, they have limited access to other Deaf children and virtually no access to Deaf adult role models. A few of my students need to learn American Sign Language (ASL) as soon as possible so that they can effectively communicate. I am currently providing them with that opportunity for the first time, as they have never been exposed to it before.

I would like to expand our classroom library to include a variety of books that include characters who are Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, or Hearing Impaired. Not only will these books increase their motivation to read for pleasure, it will provide valuable exposure that can not be provided in "real-life" at this time. The books I am requesting vary greatly in genre and reading level. This will allow me to reach all of my students this year and in the future. I am also requesting a few of the most highly reviewed Sign Language DVDs. While I am fluent in ASL, the children who need to learn to sign for communication will greatly benefit from interacting with other signers, even if that is through media.

My students are sweet, bright, and motivated. Unfortunately right now, they are also isolated. They deserve access to language and communication, to be part of a Deaf community, and to realize they are not alone in this world. At this time, I can not give them this exposure due to our location and lack of a Deaf Community nearby. My hope in this project is to provide these experiences through text, increasing their literacy at the same time. Thank you for your consideration!
