My Students

My students are six and seven years old, representing many different ethnic groups, cultures, and abilities. They eagerly come to school each day to not only learn academics, but to learn how to be good citizens and how to be valuable and valued members of our community.

We are a diverse school, and an inclusive one.

We try to meet the needs of all our students, while making it a fun and inspiring environment in which to learn and thrive.

My Project

This huge amount of leveled books would give my students a wide variety of texts from which to choose. Having books of high interest at every level would be a dream come true. My students will be more motivated to read and to improve their reading with these brand new leveled books. The Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems make reading fun, and students love to read these independently. As students begin reading at higher levels, the book series like Nate the Great and Mr. Putter and Tabby will take them into the realm of chapter books. We also have a unit on folktales and fairytales, so the different versions of Cinderella will teach my students more about comparing and contrasting literature.

Watching the light bulbs go off as students decode longer and longer words is amazing.

First grade is a milestone in terms of establishing the love for reading and the growth in this year is phenomenal.

Reading is the gateway into the world. Having both fiction and nonfiction leveled books is a necessity as students begin to read independently. We have Readers' Workshop every day where my students are reading for 45 minutes at a time. We need lots of books!
