Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each morning in my classroom begins with breakfast and books. During this time, students gather around one another to peer into the pages of an author's hard work. My students love to share books with their friends. They discuss the scary, the sad, and the silly all at the start of our day.

All of my students come from different reading backgrounds.

Some of them are learning the English language, some of them are figuring out the concept of a book, and some of them are being read to for the first time. My students amaze me each day as they dig into the hard work of being readers.

My Project

These book sets will help support my growing readers as they move onto more complex texts. I plan to begin by using the books to teach whole group and small group reading skills using a document camera. I chose reading sets that involve characters that will capture the attention of my students. As the students grow as readers, progressing through harder skills, they can continue to read about their favorite characters. The books will then be placed in individual student book baggies to be used during reading workshop. Students will be able to gain new phonics skills, comprehension, and fluency. I chose texts that correlate with our science standards to help support learning for our inquiry unit on Animals and Plants. The books will serve as a model for students during their informational writing unit. After a trip to the zoo, students will use the books as mentor texts when writing their own animal books.

The books from this project will keep up the engagement levels of my students as they gain new literacy skills.

We live in a world filled with words. I want my students to be able to comprehend the world around them and I want my students to be able contribute to our world. Giving the gift of reading to my students is a top priority. "A parent or a teacher has only his lifetime; a good book can teach forever." —Louis L’Amour
