I am a second-grade teacher in a small town with about 95 percent of the population being Native American. I have been teaching at the DPS for 14 years. The majority of my students and their families qualify for free and reduced price lunches. My students are very hands on and love to dig right into their learning.
We are located near a reservation and the poverty level is high.
As a teacher in this area, I try to expose them to the world around them. My goal is to make this year as normal as possible for them.
I have purchased many supplies for my students and classroom that encourage them to think outside the box. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My Project
After I introduce a new skill or concept, I like to introduce my students to independent learning centers. During our Reading Block, my students visit different literacy centers with a specific purpose in mind. These literacy centers would be a great addition to our classroom.
Literacy Centers helps to reinforce the new skill/concept by giving each of my students a chance to practice and apply the knowledge at a level that is appropriate for each student.
I have noticed that the use of literacy centers has boosted their confidence in whole group instruction and is helping students build fluency, comprehension skills, and vocabulary.
I am also asking for Clorox Wipes that we can use to wipe down all the materials included in the Literacy Centers so all students can enjoy safely. By donating to our project, you will help meet all my students needs and become effective readers.
