Literacy Initiative: Books for Struggling Readers

My students need high interest books to encourage literacy and promote reading skills.

My Students

When students enter high school reading below grade level they often feel angry and defeated. They know they "aren't as smart as others," or at least feel that way. Too often they avoid reading and the associated benefits of improved literacy. We need high interest and engaging books for them!

Our students are generally the lowest performing students in the school.

The "General English 10 Class" is for those students struggling with reading and writing. They have experienced disappointment in past courses regarding reading. They often see themselves as poor students and claim they "never do well" in school. Our rural district is facing the same challenges as all districts: declining funding. As our staff has determined that improving literacy in all forms of text is our student body's greatest need, we have focused our course on that goal. Students are required to read in and out of class.

My Project

Having these books will give our students a substantial variety of options we currently do not have. Reading is so important in school and even more so in the work place. We need to help students be prepared for the literacy demands of the job market. The books selected represent a variety of genres and will help students learn to analyze various types of text.

Having these resources available will encourage our students as they prepare for their futures in college or in the work force.

Thank you for taking the time to read this request! I appreciate your consideration in helping fund this project.
