My Students

Many of my students struggle to find books that they can see themselves and their life experiences reflected in. My students have the desire to be engaged in rigorous and meaningful exploration of literature, they just need texts that help them to stay anchored in the work.

This year, I have the opportunity to work with a group of thoughtful, passionate, principled young people.

My students are eager to learn, and use the skills they develop in class to impact their communities in meaningful ways. My students face challenges daily that many in our city do not even have to think about, and despite these challenges, or perhaps because of them, our students come with a genuine sense of hopefulness and unabashed determination. My school is working hard to provide our students with the resources, opportunities and learning experiences that support the growth and development of our kids and it is my hope that you can help us in this endeavor.

My Project

I am writing to ask for help in building my classroom library. At this point, I do not have a library that will meet the needs of the various types of learners in my classroom. We are a school that is committed to meeting the literacy needs of all learners and have chosen Columbia Teachers’ College’ approach to literacy as our methodological approach to meeting these needs. A classroom library that includes texts that are highly engaging, representative of various genres and reading levels and are reflective of student’s lives and experiences as well as books that give them access to the world beyond South Seattle are essential to ensuring student achievement and well-being. Students will use the books from their classroom library daily to take the skills we are leaning in class and apply those skills to their independent and group explorations in order to achieve mastery on various learning activities and assessments.

Your donations will directly help build a classroom library that truly meets the needs of our students.

These books will be used daily to in order to build context around historical topics and concepts we are learning, to highlight the lives and experiences of ourselves and others and provide engaging material from which to engage the hard work of the Common Core literacy standards. Providing my students with the resources they are deserving of will ensure that they reach the goals.
