I am the media specialist (librarian) for a traditional elementary school and I work with students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Many students visit the media center daily to borrow books for a variety of purposes (e.g., recreational reading, information gathering, book reporting). I wish to add thirty-five new children's books for my students to borrow and thereby support their pursuit of literacy.
Reading is fundamental to literacy and books are a resource to achieve that end. To ensure that these books would reach all students, I will be submitting a request for titles that embrace grades kindergarten through fifth grade. It would be particularly helpful if this request is honored as the media center has not been heavily funded over the last couple of years.
Children are so excited about new books in the media center, an excitement upon which I would like to capitalize by offering just that! To support reading is to support literacy and to support literacy is to support learning!
