My Students
Special Education is not all that special; it is just a class where we can meet their needs. Accessible education means that each student can learn and grow in a supportive and individualized environment.
Literacy is a right that every student has, no matter their ability.
By bringing in texts at various grade and reading levels, I can help make sure that my learners are engaged and working on their reading goals.
The students that I have the pleasure of teaching are a great example of what never giving up looks like. They help everyone remember that life is short and we should live life to the fullest. New to high school, and fresh off of two years remote, they face a new set of struggles every day, and getting back into literacy is an important way to jump-start their high school years.
My Project
As students with disabilities get older, there becomes a stigma around the types of books they can/choose to read. Often written off as “childish” the colorful and accessible books they enjoy are no longer available to them.
My goal with this project is to create a library that has my students' interests and reading levels at the forefront so they can fall in love with books again.
With students who have reading levels ranging from pre-literacy to 4th grade, it has been a challenge to imagine what this might look like. I figured it out! Stop playing by the rules and instead think of my students at the forefront.
Once they are re-engaged, we can work on literacy skills like decoding, sight words, comprehension, and fluency.
Learning looks different for every student and I hope we start to love to a place where learners of all ages can access books they enjoy no matter what society or lawmakers say!
