My kindergarten class is in a high need community. Many of our students come to school having never been exposed to quality literacy materials and books. We also serve a high concentration of ESL and special education students at our school.

Students who do not master early literacy skills at an early age struggle throughout school and sadly, some drop out before graduating high school. In 15 years of teaching at the same high need school, I've seen many students give up after years of struggling to learn to read. If students are not reading on grade level by third grade, they are not likely to finish high school. The obstacles for them are just too great. We have a small window of opportunity to reach these students. They are already about 5 years behind many of their peers in more affluent schools. Helping them master the literacy skills necessary to read before third grade is a battle we face each day. The clock is ticking and we desperately need your help.

My students need early literacy learning center materials that will be interactive, motivating and engaging. The alphabet pointers will get them to physically search their environment for the letters in the alphabet. This will show them just how important these letters are because they make up the words they read. The word building materials will take them the next step by engaging the students in looking for particular letters to make words that they can read. Students will realize that the letters have sounds that they can use to decode and - YES - finally begin to READ. We need these materials to hook these 5 - 6 year olds into fun reading activities.

Your help will ensure that my students have a chance to catch up on the basic building blocks of our language - letters, sounds, and words. Please help my students make the connection that could save them years of struggling to read. With a firm foundation in kindergarten, they will be ready to say with pride, "Look out first grade. Here we come!"
