My duty is to educate my students, but I also have an obligation to inspire dreams and to give hope that dreams can come true. I cannot do this alone. There must be collaboration among fellow teachers, administrators, and community helpers in order to create the best learning environment.
Our population is 79% African American and 21% Hispanic.
Like many schools, we have students who are academically successful and those who struggle. I feel that it is both my personal and professional responsibility to help bridge that divide. Will having every available resource at my disposal solve that problem? No, but it will provide me with more tools to be able to continue to deliver quality instruction to students who I know are brilliant and will, one day, rise and shine.
As an educator, I get excited when I observe my students’ “light bulb” moments when they realize that they can both spell and write words. As a teacher it is my responsibility to help lead my students to their highest self. Literacy is a gift that everyone deserves. Learning to read and write grows and strengthens young and older minds, alike. It inspires dreams; it gives hope; and it transforms lives.
Classrooms are composed of students with both wide-ranging experiences and varied learning abilities, and these students deserve a positive school experience.
That can only happen if they are being led by knowledgeable, competent, passionate, and compassionate teachers, and good teachers need ample tools, of which they can never have too many, to help deliver meaningful and engaging instruction. Hence, a financial contribution from the Atlanta Public School CLL, by way of a mini-grant, will allow me to purchase First Little Readers-Complete Library and Building Vocabulary Listening Center Skills Packs. First Little Readers is repetitive texts that builds reading fluency. Building Vocabulary Listening Center Skills Packs help build vocabulary and comprehension skills . Each day, during centers, students will practice reading a First Little Readers book, based on their individual reading level, as part of their daily center activities. Additionally, students will practice, daily, retelling stories using the Building Vocabulary Listening Center Skills Packs. Having these resources in my classroom will help improve my students' literacy skills thereby building both their academic confidence and nurturing their independence in the classroom. It truly takes a village to help children reach their destiny called GREATNESS!
