My students need reading and phonics materials including books, magnetic letters, and easel, and more to support them during small group instruction and literacy centers.

Do you remember the feeling you got the first time to read a book cover to cover? My students are well on their way to having this success, but are in need of materials to support learning in phonics. These materials are the building blocks for these students to become fluent readers and writers
I teach five and six-year-old kindergrtners at a small, lower-elementary college preparatory public charter school.
These 26 students are so motivated to learn and are deeply invested in growing reading levels, but it is no secret that we face many challenges each day. My students are growing up in a low-income, urban neighborhood in the largest city in the Midwest. Because of where they live, many of my students, even at the age of five, are already victims of the achievement gap.
Now four months into the school year, these kindergarten scholars are growing rapidly! Getting to see their growth in reading is so remarkable. We are at a time of the year when whole-group instruction just isn't cutting it, due to the varied levels that my students are at. Centers and small group instruction are ways to help differentiate learning to exactly what each individual student needs. My students deserve an education that caters to them, to their needs, and that can support them in realizing their academic potential in elementary school all the way through college graduation in 2024. The materials included in this proposal will support my students' learning specifically in phonics and phonemic awareness skills. These are the foundational skills to becoming fluent readers. They include: rhyming; identify beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words' segmenting and blending sounds to create words; using words appropriately to build sentences; and so much more.
Kindergarten is a crucial year in these students' lives to build the foundation necessary to become successful, lifelong learners.
My students are so excited about reading, entering my classroom each and every day telling me that they are ready to "grow their brains". These literacy materials would allow them to realize their academic potential throughout this year and to ignite their love of reading.
