I teach five and six-year-old kindergrtners at a small, lower-elementary college preparatory public charter school. These 26 students are so motivated to learn and are deeply invested in growing reading levels, but it is no secret that we face many challenges each day. My students are growing up in a low-income, urban neighborhood in the largest city in the Midwest. Because of where they live, many of my students, even at the age of five, are already victims of the achievement gap.
